The 2008 Clark Freeport International Marathon is organized by the Clark Development Corporation in partnership with ActivAsia, Inc., and the country’s media giant, ABS-CBN. Complying with international marathon standards and regulations, the race is sanctioned by the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and endorsed by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
The run, called “Race to the Futureâ€, boasts of many firsts. Aside from being the first major sporting event of the year and the first of what is to be an annual event, the marathon offers the biggest marathon prizes the Philippines has ever seen, totaling up to 1.8 Million Pesos with a grand prize of US$7,000.00 for the 42-K champion.
The Clark Freeport International Marathon is also the first race in the country for 2008 to use a special computer chip that can monitor the progress of the runners using GPS technology that also accurately records the exact time each runner crosses the start and finsih line.
The race also has 5-K and 10-K categories. It will be held at the sprawling and scenic Clark Freeport, the country’s sports haven.
The marathon is open to the public. Top runners from the country are expected to join. Runners from around Asia are expected to fly in for the event. The race will be televised by the ABS-CBN network in the country and The Filipino Channel worldwide.
